If you’re deciding between Trastevere and Monti, you’re choosing between two of Rome’s most charming neighborhoods.
Both are full of character, lined with excellent restaurants, and within easy reach of Rome’s most famous attractions. However, they offer very different experiences.
Trastevere is lively, atmospheric, and famous for its narrow cobbled streets, bustling piazzas, and vibrant nightlife. It’s the kind of neighborhood where you’ll happily spend an entire evening wandering from one wine bar to the next.
Monti, on the other hand, feels more relaxed and local. Located just a short walk from the Colosseum, it combines historic streets with independent boutiques, cozy cafés, and a laid-back atmosphere that makes it easy to explore on foot.
I’ve spent time in both neighborhoods, and while you can’t go wrong with either, the best choice depends on the type of city break you’re planning.
Trastevere is one of the most popular places to stay in Rome, and it’s easy to understand why. Colorful buildings, ivy-covered façades, lively squares, and charming alleyways create an atmosphere that feels unmistakably Roman.
During the day, Trastevere is relatively peaceful. Visitors explore historic churches, browse local shops, and enjoy long lunches on sunny terraces. Once evening arrives, however, the neighborhood comes alive. Restaurants fill up, bars become busy, and both locals and tourists gather in the piazzas to enjoy Rome’s famous evening atmosphere.
Food is one of Trastevere’s biggest highlights. You’ll find everything from traditional trattorias and family-run restaurants to wine bars and modern Italian cuisine. It’s one of the best neighborhoods in Rome if dining is an important part of your trip.
Accommodation ranges from boutique hotels to apartments and guesthouses. Because of its popularity, prices are generally higher than in some other parts of Rome, especially during the peak travel season.
One thing to keep in mind is transportation. Trastevere doesn’t have its own metro station, so you’ll mostly rely on walking, trams, buses, or taxis. Fortunately, many of Rome’s major sights can still be reached on foot, although it usually takes a little longer than from Monti.

Monti is one of Rome’s oldest neighborhoods, sitting between the Colosseum and Via Nazionale. Despite its central location, it has managed to keep a relaxed, local atmosphere.
The streets are lined with independent boutiques, artisan shops, cafés, wine bars, and small restaurants. Compared to Trastevere, Monti feels quieter and less crowded, making it an excellent place to return to after a busy day of sightseeing.
One of Monti’s biggest advantages is its location. The Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Piazza Venezia are all within walking distance, while the Cavour metro station makes it easy to reach other parts of Rome.
Food lovers won’t be disappointed either. While the restaurant scene isn’t quite as extensive as Trastevere’s, Monti offers plenty of excellent trattorias, stylish cafés, and wine bars without feeling overly touristy.
Accommodation includes boutique hotels, apartments, and smaller guesthouses. Prices are generally similar to Trastevere, although you’ll often find slightly better value outside the busiest streets.
The nightlife is much quieter than in Trastevere. Instead of lively piazzas, you’ll find cozy wine bars and relaxed cafés, making Monti a better fit for travelers who prefer peaceful evenings.

Both Trastevere and Monti are excellent places to stay in Rome, but they suit different types of travelers.
Choose Trastevere if you want lively evenings, outstanding restaurants, and one of the city’s most atmospheric neighborhoods. It’s perfect if food, nightlife, and soaking up Rome’s vibrant street life are high on your list.
Choose Monti if you prefer a quieter base with excellent access to Rome’s historic landmarks. Its central location, relaxed atmosphere, and walkability make it an ideal choice for first-time visitors who plan to spend most of their days exploring the city.
Personally, I slightly prefer Monti. I love being able to walk to the Colosseum early in the morning before the crowds arrive, and I appreciate the neighborhood’s calmer atmosphere after a busy day of sightseeing.
That said, if your ideal evening involves enjoying an aperitivo before settling into a traditional trattoria surrounded by lively piazzas, Trastevere may easily become your favorite part of Rome.
Whichever neighborhood you choose, you’ll be staying in one of the city’s most enjoyable areas, with Rome’s incredible history, food, and culture right on your doorstep.
