Should I Stay In Sukhuvmit or Pratunam?
My Brutally Honest Opinion

When you’re choosing between Sukhumvit or Pratunam for your upcoming trip, you’re essentially choosing between one of the most convenient and bustling areas in the city (Sukhumvit) and a centrally located, well-connected shopping area known for its access to the Airport Rail Link.

While at first glance I would recommend Sukhumvit over Pratunam, with its recent renovations (and construction still ongoing), Pratunam has developed itself into a real competitor. So, in this article, I will break down each area and make bold statements so you can make an easy choice.

Sukhumvit: Incredibly Convenient, Modern, and Full of Nightlife

Sukhumvit is an all-time favorite area among tourists. And although the city is still moving and changing rapidly, I don’t see that changing anytime soon. One of the major perks of staying in Sukhumvit is, of course, the Sukhumvit Line of Bangkok’s SkyTrain (also known as the BTS). Right above the main concrete artery of the city, Sukhumvit Road, lies a train system that takes you to every central neighborhood and beyond.

As a tourist, you will mainly use the Sukhumvit Line, despite the fact that there are other lines too (Silom Line and Airport Rail Link). As Sukhumvit is such a central and important location, many hotels, shopping centers, restaurants, nightlife areas, night markets, massage parlors, and convenience stores have claimed a spot nearby. And none of the other parts of Bangkok can compete with this level of convenience.

The cherry on top is the interchange with the Metro (MRT) at Asoke BTS. Right in the heart of Sukhumvit, at Asoke, you can take the metro in multiple directions, meaning that from here, you can literally reach every corner of the city. This comes in handy whenever you’re out sightseeing. When you want to see one of the highlights, the most convenient way (thanks to the extension of the metro line a few years back) is by taking the metro towards Chinatown and beyond. There is even a metro station near the older parts of Bangkok, close to Wat Pho.

Whenever you’re done seeing Bangkok’s must-sees, you head back to your hotel, refresh yourself, and explore the best part of Bangkok: its nightlife. No matter your age, Bangkok at night is fun for everyone. That means you don’t have to party at RCA (where you can find the largest nightclubs in the city), but you can also wander through a night market. Night markets are perfect spots for delicious street food, a coconut smoothie, live music, and socializing without breaking the bank.

If you do want to party until dawn, the options are endless. Aside from RCA, Thonglor Soi 10 and Sukhumvit 31 (Phrom Phong) are popular spots among locals too. At Sukhumvit Soi 11, there are plenty of venues that specifically target foreigners. Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza are known for their adult entertainment. And between each of these popular nightlife areas, there are plenty of cool places to discover.

If you return to your hotel in the late afternoon, it’s also highly recommended to catch the sunset at one of the many rooftop bars. Octave is my go-to venue, as the views are spectacular and the dress code is not too strict.

Lastly, don’t underestimate the convenience of having all those shopping malls right at your doorstep. At almost every central BTS station on the Sukhumvit Line, you can find at least one huge mall. Air-conditioned and full of entertainment, they are popular spots for both tourists and locals to simply wander around instead of walking in the heat outside.

Combining all these perks, it’s quite clear why Sukhumvit is such a popular area. Are there any negative aspects? Some might say it’s overly touristy. Perhaps too modern for their taste. Maybe all the nightlife and shopping malls are not what you’re looking for in Bangkok. Before jumping into Pratunam, do know that Pratunam and Sukhumvit have many similarities. If you’re really seeking something calmer, I’d recommend Bangkok’s Riverside instead.

Pratunam: Shopping District That Feels Like Authentic Bangkok

Pratunam is the area northeast of Siam, the shopping epicenter of Bangkok. And Pratunam has inherited some of Siam’s commercial energy. But as it lies slightly away from the major roads, it doesn’t feel as commercial as Siam. In fact, if you pick accommodation in one of the alleys, you might be surprised at how calm Bangkok can be.

As Pratunam does not have direct access to the BTS (aside from a 10-minute walk), it feels far less developed than Sukhumvit. Some might find this particularly attractive, as it gives you the feeling of visiting Bangkok a decade ago. However, Bangkok’s pace of renovation and modernization also applies to Pratunam. Bit by bit, older buildings are making room for brand-new skyscrapers, although this process is slower compared to the central areas along the Sukhumvit Line.

Pratunam’s night market is among the oldest in the city, and around this area there are plenty of shopping options. The market caters mostly to locals, so don’t expect the latest fashion to be on display. In my honest opinion, it’s not the most interesting market the city has to offer. Jodd Fairs and Srinakarin are much more fun, with better food options and a better atmosphere, but it’s still nice to have a night market near your hotel.

One of the major advantages of staying in Pratunam is the good access to the Airport Rail Link, a train line that runs from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phaya Thai BTS Station. When staying in Pratunam, the most convenient station is Ratchaprarop, but I would recommend staying closer to Phaya Thai. This is the fastest way to get to and from the airport.

Nowadays, you can also use the SRT Dark Red Line to go straight to Don Mueang Airport, meaning that Pratunam is an incredibly convenient area if you want to stay central and have good access to the airports (for example, if you need to catch an early flight).

But what Pratunam lacks is a proper nightlife scene. There isn’t much of one at all. This can also be a huge perk, especially when traveling with kids. If you’re looking for a more authentic and calmer experience in Bangkok, while still staying relatively close to Sukhumvit, Pratunam is an excellent option. Just know that access to transportation isn’t as good as in Sukhumvit.

There is one little secret, though: you can use the boat taxi all the way to the older parts of the city to visit Bangkok’s highlights. This form of transport is often overlooked by tourists. From Pratunam Pier, you can hop on one of these boats. If you’re planning to use this form of transport, stay as close as possible to this pier.

Conclusion: Sukhumvit or Pratunam?

So, should you choose Sukhumvit or Pratunam? If it’s your first time in Bangkok, the answer is simple: Sukhumvit is the safest and most convenient choice. With direct access to the BTS and MRT, endless dining options, and a nightlife scene that suits every type of traveler, it’s the area that makes your trip effortless. You’ll spend less time figuring things out and more time actually enjoying the city.

Pratunam, on the other hand, is a great alternative for those who have already visited Bangkok or simply prefer a slightly calmer and more local feel. It still offers excellent shopping and unbeatable access to the Airport Rail Link, making it especially attractive if you’re on a tighter schedule or catching an early flight.

That said, if you value convenience, connectivity, and having everything at your doorstep, Sukhumvit is hard to beat. But if you’re willing to trade a bit of that convenience for a quieter stay with a more authentic edge, Pratunam might surprise you in a good way.

In the end, you’re not choosing between good and bad… you’re choosing between easy and slightly more adventurous. And in a city like Bangkok, both can lead to an unforgettable stay.
