Where To Stay In Ninh Binh First Time - Just 2 Options!

Wondering where to stay in Ninh Binh first time? I’m confident enough to give you a very good, short answer.

During our three-month trip through Vietnam, we stayed here for five days and got a good sense of what each destination truly has to offer.

Ninh Binh is Vietnam at its most beautiful. No skyline or beach here, but a landscape that feels like a living postcard.

Think jagged limestone karst mountains rising from vibrant green rice paddies, winding rivers where you glide silently through caves in a rowboat, and viewpoints that reward you with breathtaking panoramas after a short climb.

It’s no wonder this area is often called “Halong Bay on land.” The absolute highlights are spread throughout the region. You can take a boat trip among towering rock formations, cycle along narrow dikes past rice paddies, visit ancient temples, and end the day with a sunset from a mountaintop.

Everything is relatively close together, but if you look on Google Maps or Booking.com, you’ll see that accommodations are scattered all over the place. In the middle of the city, along busy roads, or somewhere secluded among the fields.

We make it easy for you: look no further than Tam Coc or Trang An. Don’t stay in the city of Ninh Binh itself, but choose one of these two areas.

There, you’re surrounded by nature, close to boat trips, the rice paddies, and other highlights. Plus, you’ll ultimately visit both areas, as they’re only five kilometers apart. The difference lies mainly in the atmosphere.

If you’re looking for liveliness and a pleasant atmosphere, there’s a clear winner. If you’re looking for peace and quiet and nature, you’ll choose a different option. I’ll explain exactly why below.

What are the best areas to stay in Ninh Binh first time?

The best options for staying in Ninh Binh first time are Tam Coc and Trang An. Don’t look beyond these two areas, because you’ll only make things harder for yourself.

Tam Coc is the charming and vibrant base of Ninh Binh, with direct access to rice paddies and a charming main street lined with restaurants.

Trang An is the tranquil, green region where nature and unique homestays take center stage.

For the vast majority of travelers, Tam Coc is the best option.

Let’s briefly brake this down.

Name of the areaIdeal for
Tam CocHere you’ll stay in the heart of the landscape for which you came to Ninh Binh, with limestone mountains and vast rice paddies just around the corner. The boat trip sails right through the fields and feels less crowded than the one at Trang An Landscape Complex. If you choose a homestay in the countryside, you’ll combine tranquility with the bustle of the city center, just a bike ride away.
Trang AnHere you’ll stay in the UNESCO-listed landscape of the Trang An Landscape Complex, with direct access to the region’s most impressive boat trip. The accommodations are scattered between the mountains and the water, ensuring maximum peace and privacy. It’s less bustling than Tam Coc, but ideal if you want to fully immerse yourself in nature and tranquility.

The best areas to stay in Ninh Binh first time are:

1. Tam Coc

For many, the best option, offering convenience, a good location, nice restaurants, and some nightlife here and there.

Tam Coc is the most pleasant and accessible place to stay in Ninh Binh.

The village has a compact main street with restaurants, cafes, and a few bars where you can relax with a cold drink after a day of exploring.

It feels lively, but not overwhelming. This is precisely what makes it the perfect base for many travelers.

What makes Tam Coc particularly appealing is its direct access to expansive rice paddies.

Hop on your bike and within a few minutes you’ll be riding through the greenery, with karst mountains in the background. This is the Ninh Binh feeling you came for.

The boat trip here is also special. Unlike Trang An, in Tam Coc you sail right through the rice paddies.

Especially during the growing season, this makes for spectacular views.

Although boat trips from Trang An are often recommended, my personal preference is Tam Coc. It feels a little less organized and less crowded.

Looking for peace and quiet? You’ll find it here too. Off the main street, countless homestays are tucked away in the fields.

We stayed in one of these homestays ourselves, where you wake up in the morning with a view of limestone cliffs and buffalo in the distance.

Many accommodations offer bicycles, ideal for exploring the area at your leisure.

Be sure to choose a place with a few restaurants and a small convenience store nearby, so you’re not dependent on cycling to the center in the evening.

Vibrant, friendly, and with fantastic access to the rice paddies: Tam Coc is simply the best choice for many travelers.

Transportation to and from Ninh Binh

Like most travelers, we traveled from Hanoi to Ninh Binh. In our case, we took a minivan. You can easily arrange this online and it costs around VND 250,000 per person. You can also take the bus; it costs VND 150,000 per person. After about an hour and a half, you arrive in the city of Ninh Binh, where in our case, the next minivan was already waiting to take us to our homestay. The entire journey from our hotel in Hanoi to Ninh Binh took 2 hours and 15 minutes.

From Ninh Binh, we took the sleeper bus to Sapa. We again arranged this online and used HK Buslines. The buses are incredibly comfortable. We booked a double cabin, but it was very cramped. I’m 195 cm tall, so for the bus trip from Ninh Binh back to Hanoi, we booked two single cabins, which are actually the same cabins as the double. Please be aware that there may be a slight delay.

2. Trang An

A quieter area with incredibly nice and unique homestays.

Trang An is quieter, greener, and feels a bit more exclusive. Here, everything revolves around nature.

The area is part of the UNESCO-recognized Trang An Landscape Complex, and you’ll immediately notice that.

The famous boat trip winds through an impressive network of rivers and caves, surrounded by steep limestone cliffs. It’s spectacular and meticulously organized.

In terms of atmosphere, Trang An is completely different from Tam Coc.

You won’t find a compact main street full of restaurants here.

Instead, the accommodations are scattered among mountains, water, and rice paddies.

Many homestays are architecturally stunning and offer a sense of complete tranquility.

Here you wake up without the sound of traffic, with a view of a pond or dramatic rock formations behind your garden. For those who truly want to escape the hustle and bustle, this is the place.

Trang An also has a convenient location.

You’re close to the boat trip and have relatively quick access to Ninh Binh City and the old town. This makes it a logistically sound choice.

At the same time, it feels less commercialized than Tam Coc. The focus is on nature and space, not on evening entertainment.

It’s important to choose your accommodation carefully.

Because everything is spread out, it’s nice to have a restaurant or small shop nearby, unless you don’t mind driving a bit each time.

If you arrange that well, you’ll be staying in one of the most beautiful places in Northern Vietnam.

If you’re looking for peace and quiet, unique homestays, and impressive UNESCO landscapes right on your doorstep, Trang An is the right choice.

Unsure? Remember that Tam Coc and Trang An are only fifteen minutes apart.

Whichever you choose, you’ll eventually experience both.
