In this article, I’ll try to give you the best answer to your question: Laureles or Envigado?
If you’re deciding where to stay in Medellín, Poblado is probably the first neighbourhood you’ll come across.
It’s the city’s tourist epicentre and the obvious choice for many first-time visitors, with the largest concentration of hotels, restaurants, nightlife and tourist-oriented businesses.
But Poblado isn’t your only option. Laureles and Envigado both make excellent alternatives, especially if you’d prefer somewhere quieter and more local.
And you don’t have to give up Poblado either. Both neighbourhoods are within easy reach of Medellín’s tourist epicentre, so getting there for dinner, nightlife or sightseeing is relatively straightforward.
I’ve lived in Medellín for almost five years, giving me plenty of experience with the different parts of the city. And while Laureles and Envigado have plenty in common, they offer noticeably different experiences. So which one is better for your stay?
Laureles is a largely residential neighbourhood and is particularly popular among families.
It’s also relatively expensive by Colombian standards, which says something about the quality of life here.
The streets are generally peaceful, there are plenty of local amenities, and the area feels much more like a place where people actually live rather than a tourist district.
Food is one of Laureles’ biggest strengths. Around Segundo Parque de Laureles, you’ll find plenty of excellent restaurants, and that’s hardly surprising.
In Medellín, many of the city’s most popular restaurants have branches in Poblado, Laureles and Envigado, meaning you really can’t go wrong when it comes to eating in any of these three areas.
La 50 (the name of the street) offers a completely different experience, with cheaper restaurants and bars that mainly attract locals.
It can be fun, but as a foreigner, the crowds and language barrier can be a little overwhelming if you don’t speak Spanish.
Laureles has a few shopping malls, with Los Molinos being one of the better-known options, although it focuses mainly on local brands.
For bigger and more international shopping malls, Poblado and Envigado are better choices.
That said, mall food courts are a great place to try local food cheaply.
For me, however, Laureles’ biggest advantage is its location and atmosphere.
Medellín isn’t a city packed with famous landmarks like London, Dubai or Bangkok.
The city’s appeal is its vibe, its people, its almost perfect weather and the mountains surrounding it.
Laureles puts you close to some of the things that make Medellín interesting, including Comuna 13 and the short but steep hike up Cerro de las Tres Cruces, which offers fantastic views over the city.
It’s also easy to use Laureles as a base for trips to places such as Guatapé, Santa Fe de Antioquia and Jardín.
If you’re looking for peace, comfort and a high quality of life, Laureles is a superb option.
Envigado has become increasingly popular with foreigners, and one of the main reasons is Viva Envigado.
This enormous shopping centre has a huge selection of shops, restaurants and even (craft) beer bars, all in a modern and generally very safe environment.
The surrounding area has also developed rapidly, with plenty of new construction giving Envigado a more modern and urban feel than Laureles.
Food is another major reason to stay here.
Around Envigado’s Main Park, you’ll find plenty of well-known local eateries, while Calle de la Buena Mesa is one of my favourite areas for going out for dinner and having a drink afterwards.
If food is high on your list, Envigado is difficult to beat.
There is also a local nightlife scene, but honestly, I wouldn’t choose Envigado specifically for nightlife.
If you want to go out and experience the nightlife that attracts most foreign visitors, head to Provenza in Poblado instead.
It’s easy enough to get there from Envigado, so you can enjoy a quieter base without being completely disconnected from the action.
Compared with Laureles, Envigado feels more like a growing city.
There’s more high-rise construction, newer developments and a stronger sense of urban expansion.
Viva Envigado is effectively the area’s modern epicentre, with several surrounding streets offering restaurants and places to have a drink.
But that’s also where the comparison with Poblado becomes important.
If you want to stay somewhere with constant energy, nightlife and a large concentration of foreign visitors, Poblado is still the obvious choice.
Envigado is better suited to travellers who want a modern, comfortable and food-focused neighbourhood, while still being close enough to Poblado whenever they want more action.
So, which one should you choose?
I’d pick Laureles:
I’d choose Envigado:
Neither neighbourhood, however, offers the same level of action as Poblado. And that’s precisely the point. If you’re looking for nightlife, international restaurants, bars and the biggest concentration of tourists, stay in Poblado. If you’d rather escape that tourist bubble, Laureles and Envigado are both excellent alternatives.
Personally, I’d choose Laureles for a longer, more relaxed stay and Envigado if I wanted a modern neighbourhood with fantastic food.
And don’t worry too much about being away from Poblado. Both are close enough to jump in a taxi and be there when you want to experience the city’s more touristy side.
In the end, it comes down to what kind of Medellín you want to experience.
