When wondering whether to stay in Koh Phi Phi or Koh Lanta, you couldn’t pick two more opposite destinations. One is dominated by mass tourism more than ever, while the other offers peace, remote beaches, and affordable food options.
Still, I would choose Koh Phi Phi over Koh Lanta, but that’s because of the type of islands I personally enjoy visiting. And with a bit of planning ahead, it’s still very manageable to avoid the crowds on an island like Koh Phi Phi.
That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy my stay on Koh Lanta, though. Based on my experiences (and those are quite extensive when it comes to traveling in Thailand), I will give my honest opinion on both islands. No sugarcoating, just an objective comparison between these popular destinations in southern Thailand. Let’s dive in.
My first visit to Koh Phi Phi dates back to 2015, when I backpacked through Thailand for five weeks. Halfway through this amazing trip, we arrived on Koh Phi Phi. When you’re in your twenties, Koh Phi Phi is awesome: great beaches, lovely day trips, lots of snorkeling, and plenty of nightlife in the evenings.
That was not the last time I visited Koh Phi Phi. The island is compact, and there are no cars, which automatically makes it easy for such a popular destination to become congested. Nowadays, day-tour operators also visit the island around lunchtime, dropping off hungry guests who eat at one of the many buffet venues near the pier. This is not exactly what you’d expect from a tropical destination like Phi Phi, and during lunchtime, you should avoid this area at all costs.
But if you’re staying at Long Beach or Viking Beach during that time of day, you won’t be bothered by all those people. On Koh Lanta, however, you will never experience this level of mass tourism, and remote, nearly empty beaches are abundant. That is already one of the major differences between these two islands.
In the late afternoon, the vibe on Phi Phi changes completely. People flock to Loh Dalum Beach to grab a seat by the shore. Within a few hours, the sun is about to set, and the sunsets here are spectacular. In the early evening, the fire shows begin, and the island prepares for a full night out.
You can party on the beaches, but also in the heart of the island. The famous Reggae Bar (where tourists fight each other in a boxing ring) perfectly defines the craziness of Phi Phi. It’s incredibly easy to make friends here. And whenever you’re hungry, you can choose from one of the many restaurants that stay open until late at night. This includes Burger King, McDonald’s, and countless pizzerias… not exactly authentic, is it?
If you’re not the type of traveler who enjoys partying and eating an international meal at 2 a.m., Koh Phi Phi might not be the right choice for you, although much of the chaos can be avoided if you stay on the quieter outskirts of the island.
But that ultimately defines Koh Phi Phi: mass tourism and full-blown hedonism.

Now, let’s compare that with Koh Lanta.
Koh Lanta is, in contrast to Phi Phi, a large island. And if you’re visiting the island, you’re basically forced to rent a motorbike. If you don’t want to ride a motorbike in a foreign country (which is completely understandable considering the risks), then visiting Koh Lanta doesn’t really make much sense.
But if you do rent one, you’ll experience the complete opposite of Koh Phi Phi: no major nightlife areas, lots of remote beaches, no McDonald’s, cheap meals and drinks, and no tour operators dropping off hundreds of hungry tourists at the same time.
Koh Lanta is the definition of laid-back, to the point where it can actually feel boring for people who like to combine beach life with nightlife. But if you’re the type of traveler who enjoys taking things slow, exploring the island at your own pace, stopping for a smoothie and Pad Thai during a road trip, sunbathing on remote beaches, getting a massage every now and then, and truly disconnecting from daily life, then Koh Lanta is definitely the better choice over Koh Phi Phi.
But keep this in mind: there is a reason why Koh Phi Phi is so busy while Koh Lanta is not. Koh Phi Phi offers some of the most beautiful places in southern Thailand, with Maya Bay being the prime example. If Koh Lanta had the same level of stunning highlights (such as world-class diving spots, snorkeling locations, unique nightlife venues, beachfront clubs, and spectacular day trips), then Koh Lanta would probably have turned into a second Phuket by now.
But in reality, Koh Lanta simply does not offer these major highlights, which is the main reason why mass tourism hasn’t fully arrived there… and likely never will.
For some travelers, that’s a blessing. But it’s important to understand that Koh Lanta has far fewer things to discover. If that matches your travel style, then Koh Lanta won’t disappoint you. But if you’re the type of traveler who constantly wants to experience major highlights and iconic attractions, Koh Lanta may fall short.
There’s no Big Buddha, no party street, no historical landmark, and no spectacular evening show.

Based on everything discussed above, the answer depends entirely on what you expect from a tropical island in Thailand. These two islands attract completely different types of travelers, and in many ways, they are the exact opposite of each other.
If you want spectacular scenery, famous highlights, vibrant nightlife, social energy, boat tours, snorkeling trips, beach parties, and a destination where there is always something happening, then Koh Phi Phi is the better choice. Yes, it is overcrowded, heavily commercialized, and at times exhausting. But there is a reason millions of travelers continue to visit Phi Phi every year: the island is visually stunning and offers a level of excitement that few islands in Thailand can match.
Koh Lanta takes the opposite approach. It’s quiet, slow-paced, and intentionally uneventful. You won’t find world-famous attractions, crazy nightlife, or endless entertainment. Instead, you get empty beaches, quiet roads, cheap local restaurants, small beach bars, and an atmosphere that feels increasingly rare in Thailand. Koh Lanta is not about ticking off bucket-list attractions… it’s about slowing down and enjoying simple island life.
From my perspective, Koh Phi Phi is the more memorable and complete destination overall, especially if you’re traveling through Thailand for the first time. The island simply offers more iconic experiences and more variety. However, that also comes with the downside of mass tourism and a less authentic atmosphere.
Koh Lanta, on the other hand, is better suited for travelers who are tired of crowds and don’t mind sacrificing major attractions in exchange for peace and simplicity. If your ideal vacation involves riding a scooter between remote beaches, enjoying quiet sunsets, and disconnecting from the busy world for a few days, then Koh Lanta is an excellent choice.
In the end, Koh Phi Phi is about energy, highlights, and entertainment, while Koh Lanta is about calmness, space, and slowing life down.
