Moreover, there are destinations surrounding Koh Lanta that are more accessible to many travelers, such as Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, and even Phuket.
But it is precisely that underdeveloped character that makes Koh Lanta special. Are you looking for an island with an extremely relaxed atmosphere, where mass tourism has not yet fully taken hold, where you can enjoy delicious local food for just a few euros, and where you can explore the island stress-free on a scooter? Then Koh Lanta might be exactly what you are looking for.
At times, the island reminds me of Thailand ten years ago. No large boulevard along the beach, no overcrowded beach clubs, and hardly any traffic chaos. Almost every beach has its own small village with a few mini-markets, local restaurants, massage parlors, and shops selling petrol bottles for scooters. Everything looks a bit messy and disorganized, but at the same time, it works surprisingly well. That quiet, authentic character is exactly why many travelers eventually fall in love with Koh Lanta.
However, it is important to realize that Koh Lanta is a true scooter destination. Apps like Bolt, Grab, or InDrive are not available here, and taxis are relatively expensive. A tuk-tuk from the north of the island to Old Town easily costs 400 THB for a one-way trip, while you can rent a 125cc scooter for about 200 THB per day. Therefore, anyone who wants to truly experience Koh Lanta will almost always explore the island on two wheels. If you are not a fan of riding a scooter, there are probably better islands in Thailand to stay on.

Klong Khong Beach has a quieter and alternative atmosphere and is located more centrally on the island, making it easier to reach the south of Koh Lanta.
Khlong Dao Beach, on the other hand, is popular due to the many facilities and its convenient location close to the pier and Saladan.
What these beaches have in common is that they never feel overly crowded. One of the reasons for this is that sunbeds and beach chairs are largely absent on Koh Lanta. As a result, the beaches remain open and look natural. Especially in the late afternoon, you can take beautiful beach walks here, sometimes as long as 45 minutes, with a stop along the way at a simple local beach shack. That is exactly the relaxed atmosphere that distinguishes Koh Lanta from islands like Koh Samui and Phuket.

Another major advantage of Long Beach is that there are relatively many restaurants, cafes, and accommodations here without it feeling crowded or chaotic. In the small streets behind the beach, you will find local restaurants, massage parlors, scooter rentals, and mini-markets. Do not expect a luxury boulevard or perfectly organized infrastructure; Koh Lanta still feels a bit like time has stood still here. But that is precisely what makes it charming. In addition, Phra Ae Beach is conveniently located for exploring the rest of the island. You can relatively easily ride a scooter to the south of Koh Lanta, where you will find quieter beaches and viewpoints. The north of the island also remains easily accessible.
However, there are downsides as well. Long Beach is one of the most popular areas of Koh Lanta and is therefore slightly busier than the rest of the island. Still, do not expect mass tourism, but during the high season, this is clearly one of the liveliest spots on Koh Lanta. Furthermore, you will notice here that the island empties out quickly outside of the season. During the low season, various beach bars and restaurants temporarily close their doors, making the area feel much quieter.
Personally, I consider Long Beach the best choice for most travelers. Here, you get the typical quiet Koh Lanta vibe, but with just enough atmosphere and facilities to ensure you never feel isolated.
In terms of sights, Koh Lanta doesn’t have a huge amount to offer. So don’t expect impressive temples, major cultural attractions, or historical highlights here. Of course, you can visit Koh Lanta Old Town, but even that is more about atmosphere than spectacular sights.
The strength of Koh Lanta lies mainly in its relaxed lifestyle. You rent a scooter, ride from beach to beach, stop at a local restaurant along the way, and end the evening with a drink at a simple beach bar. If you are looking for a livelier destination with more entertainment and nightlife, Koh Phi Phi or Ao Nang are probably a better fit for you.
Klong Khong Beach is a beach that probably won’t make an immediate impression when you see it for the first time. The beach is less spectacular than some other beaches in Thailand, and there are rocks in the sea in several places, which doesn’t always make swimming ideal. Nevertheless, Klong Khong has something that makes many travelers end up staying longer than planned.
That lies mainly in the atmosphere. Klong Khong feels relaxed, quiet, and authentic. Between the main road and the beach lie palm trees, grassy areas, small beach bars, and simple restaurants. During sunset, with a view of Koh Phi Phi on the horizon, this place truly has charm.
A major advantage of Klong Khong Beach is its central location. You are staying here exactly between the north and south of Koh Lanta, meaning you can get everywhere relatively quickly. That makes this beach ideal for travelers who want to ride around a lot by scooter and discover different parts of the island.
Additionally, Klong Khong often feels quieter and more alternative than Long Beach. It attracts many travelers who consciously want to stay away from busy tourist hotspots. In the low season, that effect becomes even stronger: sometimes you have large parts of the beach practically to yourself.
At the same time, you have to be honest about the downsides. The beach itself is not the most beautiful on Koh Lanta, and the rocky seabed makes swimming difficult at times. If you are looking for a perfect white sand beach with clear turquoise water right in front of your accommodation, there are better options on other islands in Thailand.
Here, you also notice even more clearly how quiet Koh Lanta becomes outside the high season. Various bars and restaurants temporarily close their doors, which can make some parts of Klong Khong feel quite deserted.
Yet, for many travelers, that is precisely the reason to stay here. Klong Khong is less about perfect beaches and more about atmosphere, tranquility, and the feeling that you have found a piece of authentic Thailand.
The low season on Koh Lanta starts in mid-April, and that is when you really notice just how quiet the island actually is. Koh Lanta Walking Street closes completely during this period, and many restaurants, cafes, and beach bars operate with adjusted opening hours or temporarily close their doors.

So, keep this in mind when planning your trip. For experienced Thailand travelers, that silence can actually be appealing, but for a first visit to Thailand, it is not always ideal. You see a similar effect on islands like Koh Chang during the low season, while larger islands like Koh Phangan generally retain a bit more liveliness.

Around Khlong Dao, you will find many restaurants, cafes, massage parlors, small shops, and accommodations in various price ranges. This makes it one of the easiest places to stay when visiting Koh Lanta for the first time. Everything here feels just a bit more accessible than on the quieter beaches further south.

However, I would personally choose Long Beach or Klong Khong instead. Khlong Dao feels just a bit more touristy and less distinctive than those two beaches. Moreover, you are staying further north on the island here, meaning rides to the southern beaches and viewpoints take longer.
That being said, Khlong Dao remains an excellent choice for many travelers. If you are looking for comfortable accommodation with plenty of facilities, a beautiful beach, and an accessible location, you are probably in the right place here.
